Tea Market Size in Europe
In 2022, the Europe tea market increased by 1.9% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, showed a slight slump. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.
Tea Production in Europe
In value terms, tea production shrank significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a tangible increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 8,984,452% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Latvia (X tons) remains the largest tea producing country in Europe, comprising approx. 99.9% of total volume.
In Latvia, tea production decreased by an average annual rate of -50.0% over the period from 2012-2022.
Tea Exports
Exports in Europe
In 2022, the amount of tea exported in Europe was estimated at X tons, stabilizing at 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 12%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, tea exports reached $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 8.6% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Poland (X tons), Russia (X tons), the UK (X tons), Germany (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) represented roughly 86% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Switzerland (X tons), mixing up a 5.4% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Switzerland (with a CAGR of +6.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest tea supplier in Europe, comprising 29% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 12% share.
In Poland, tea exports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the UK (-4.4% per year) and Germany (-5.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Switzerland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+6.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Tea Imports
Imports in Europe
In 2022, approx. X tons of tea were imported in Europe; approximately mirroring 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 3.6% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, tea imports rose sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 5.9%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Russia (X tons) and the UK (X tons) represented roughly 57% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Germany (X tons) and Poland (X tons), together constituting an 18% share of total imports. The following importers - the Netherlands (X tons), France (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), Ireland (X tons) and Switzerland (X tons) - together made up 17% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Switzerland (with a CAGR of +3.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Russia ($X), the UK ($X) and Germany ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 48% of total imports. France, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Ukraine, Ireland and Switzerland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.
Poland, with a CAGR of +4.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 5.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 7% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
