The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year.
Temporarily Preserved Vegetable Production in Europe
In value terms, temporarily preserved vegetable production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 11%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Europe
In 2022, overseas shipments of vegetables (temporarily preserved) increased by 12% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, temporarily preserved vegetable exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Spain represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 51% of total exports. The Netherlands (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Poland (X tons) and Italy (X tons). All these countries together held near 30% share of total exports. Greece (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to temporarily preserved vegetable exports from Spain stood at +7.9%. At the same time, Portugal (+12.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Portugal emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +12.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Italy (-1.1%), Poland (-2.4%), the Netherlands (-4.5%), Belgium (-5.4%) and Greece (-7.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Spain (+24 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Italy, Poland, Belgium, Greece and the Netherlands saw its share reduced by -1.8%, -3.5%, -3.9%, -5.7% and -11.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Spain ($X) remains the largest temporarily preserved vegetable supplier in Europe, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Spain totaled +8.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Poland (-0.5% per year) and the Netherlands (-6.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, falling by -5.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 15% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Greece ($X per ton), while Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Greece (+3.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Temporarily Preserved Vegetable Imports
Imports in Europe
In 2022, imports of vegetables (temporarily preserved) in Europe stood at X tons, almost unchanged from the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 16%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, temporarily preserved vegetable imports rose to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Italy (X tons), Spain (X tons) and France (X tons) represented the major importer of vegetables (temporarily preserved) in Europe, comprising 51% of total import. Russia (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 7.6% share, followed by Belgium (7.1%), Germany (5.8%) and Poland (5.5%). The following importers - the UK (X tons), Romania (X tons), Belarus (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Greece (X tons) - together made up 13% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +22.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Italy ($X), France ($X) and Spain ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 57% share of total imports. Germany, Poland, Belgium, the UK, Russia, Greece, Belarus, the Netherlands and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.
Among the main importing countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +22.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 3.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the import price increased by 5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+7.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
