For the sixth year in a row, Europe recorded growth in overseas shipments of tomato ketchup and tomato sauces, which increased by 2.6% to X tons in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 9.1% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, tomato ketchup exports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons), distantly followed by Italy (X tons), Spain (X tons), Portugal (X tons), Poland (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) represented the major exporters of tomato ketchup and tomato sauces, together creating 84% of total exports. Russia (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Portugal (with a CAGR of +11.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest tomato ketchup supplying countries in Europe were the Netherlands ($X), Italy ($X) and Spain ($X), together accounting for 62% of total exports. Germany, Poland, Belgium, Portugal and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.

Portugal, with a CAGR of +12.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 7.2%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Portugal (+0.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Europe

In 2022, after five years of growth, there was decline in supplies from abroad of tomato ketchup and tomato sauces, when their volume decreased by -1.2% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 6.3%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year.

In value terms, tomato ketchup imports reached $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 7.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

The countries with the highest levels of tomato ketchup imports in 2022 were the UK (X tons), France (X tons) and Germany (X tons), together amounting to 53% of total import. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), constituting a 5.1% share of total imports. Austria (X tons), Belgium (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Poland (X tons), Switzerland (X tons), Italy (X tons), Russia (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Denmark (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +15.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest tomato ketchup importing markets in Europe were the UK ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X), together accounting for 49% of total imports. The Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Italy, Denmark, Poland, Spain and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

Among the main importing countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +13.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 2.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 6.2%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
