Unmanufactured Tobacco Market Size in Europe

The Europe unmanufactured tobacco market dropped to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -11.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 9.7%. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Unmanufactured Tobacco Production in Europe

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco production declined modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Italy (X tons), Spain (X tons) and North Macedonia (X tons), with a combined 44% share of total production. Belgium, Poland, Greece, Serbia, Croatia, Germany, Bulgaria, Hungary, the UK and France lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 51%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Belgium (with a CAGR of +68.1%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average unmanufactured tobacco yield dropped to X tons per ha in 2022, waning by -10.8% compared with 2021. In general, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, the unmanufactured tobacco yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2021, and then shrank in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of tobacco (unmanufactured) production in Europe rose modestly to X ha, surging by 2.6% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, the harvested area, however, recorded a noticeable contraction. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to unmanufactured tobacco production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Unmanufactured Tobacco Exports

Exports in Europe

In 2022, approx. X tons of tobacco (unmanufactured) were exported in Europe; reducing by -24.3% against 2021. In general, exports saw a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 63%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 63% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Italy (X tons), Germany (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Greece (X tons), Poland (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons), North Macedonia (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Croatia (X tons) represented roughly 88% of total exports in 2022.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Croatia (with a CAGR of +15.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest unmanufactured tobacco supplying countries in Europe were Germany ($X), Italy ($X) and Belgium ($X), together accounting for 49% of total exports. Greece, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Poland, Croatia and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.

Among the main exporting countries, Croatia, with a CAGR of +20.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -7.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 13% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Croatia (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Unmanufactured Tobacco Imports

Imports in Europe

After two years of growth, purchases abroad of tobacco (unmanufactured) decreased by -14.3% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports saw a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco imports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 17%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of unmanufactured tobacco imports in 2022 were Germany (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Poland (X tons), together amounting to 51% of total import. It was distantly followed by France (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Italy (X tons), together mixing up a 16% share of total imports. Greece (X tons), Romania (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons), Serbia (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +16.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Poland ($X) and Russia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 53% share of total imports. The Netherlands, Italy, Romania, Belgium, Greece, France, Ukraine, Serbia, Bulgaria and Belarus lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Italy, with a CAGR of +18.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, waning by -2.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 4.1% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+3.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
