In 2021, the Europe non-propelled vehicle market increased by 13% to $X, rising for the fourth year in a row after three years of decline. In general, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Non-Propelled Vehicle Production in Europe

In value terms, non-propelled vehicle production declined slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Europe

In 2021, shipments abroad of vehicles not mechanically propelled increased by 5% to X units for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Total exports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 86% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-propelled vehicle exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Germany was the main exporting country with an export of about X units, which reached 31% of total exports. Poland (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by the Netherlands (X units), the Czech Republic (X units) and France (X units). All these countries together took near 37% share of total exports. Italy (X units), Belgium (X units), Sweden (X units), the UK (X units), Spain (X units), Russia (X units), Finland (X units) and Croatia (X units) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from Germany increased at an average annual rate of +20.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Russia (+27.2%), Belgium (+23.0%), France (+16.9%), Spain (+14.9%), Sweden (+13.6%), the Netherlands (+5.8%), Poland (+5.6%) and Italy (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +27.2% from 2012-2021. Finland, the Czech Republic and Croatia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the UK (-8.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Germany, France, Belgium and Russia increased by +19, +2.8, +2.4 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest non-propelled vehicle supplier in Europe, comprising 33% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Poland, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Germany stood at +1.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+10.8% per year) and Poland (+6.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per unit in 2021, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per unit), while Croatia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+7.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe

In 2021, the amount of vehicles not mechanically propelled imported in Europe expanded rapidly to X units, surging by 13% against the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, non-propelled vehicle imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +80.3% against 2015 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the five major importers of vehicles not mechanically propelled, namely Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, France and Italy, represented more than half of total import. It was distantly followed by Russia (X units), making up a 4.9% share of total imports. Belgium (X units), Spain (X units), Poland (X units), Sweden (X units), Austria (X units), Romania (X units) and Denmark (X units) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Italy (with a CAGR of +13.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest non-propelled vehicle importing markets in Europe were Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and France ($X), with a combined 35% share of total imports. These countries were followed by the UK, Italy, Belgium, Russia, Spain, Austria, Poland, Sweden, Denmark and Romania, which together accounted for a further 46%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Italy, with a CAGR of +12.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 22% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per unit), while the UK ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
