In 2021, overseas shipments of waste cork, crushed, granulated or ground cork were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Total exports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 37% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, waste cork exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 53%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Spain (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together mixing up 96% of total exports. Italy (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +8.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, the largest waste cork supplying countries in Europe were Portugal ($X), Spain ($X) and Italy ($X), with a combined 97% share of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Spain, with a CAGR of +12.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Portugal (+6.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe
In 2021, the amount of waste cork, crushed, granulated or ground cork imported in Europe soared to X tons, surging by 17% compared with the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -19.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, waste cork imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 77% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Portugal (X tons) and Spain (X tons) dominates imports structure, together creating 81% of total imports. France (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 7.2% share, followed by Germany (4.8%). The following importers - Italy (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) - together made up 4.8% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Belgium (with a CAGR of +36.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Spain ($X), Portugal ($X) and France ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 83% of total imports. Germany, Italy and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.
Belgium, with a CAGR of +31.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 5.4% against the previous year. Import price indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, waste cork import price increased by +78.9% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 34%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
