Market Size for Wheat and Meslin Flour in Europe

The Europe wheat and meslin flour market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wheat and meslin flour production surged to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was growth in shipments abroad of wheat and meslin flour, when their volume increased by 4.7% to X tons. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 6.8% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wheat and meslin flour exports soared to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Germany (X tons) represented the main exporter of wheat and meslin flour, mixing up 27% of total exports. Belgium (X tons) held an 8.5% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Italy (8.2%), Russia (7%), the UK (6.7%), France (5.1%) and Hungary (4.8%). The following exporters - Slovakia (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Serbia (X tons), Spain (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons) - together made up 20% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to wheat and meslin flour exports from Germany stood at +3.9%. At the same time, Italy (+13.5%), the Netherlands (+10.4%), Russia (+4.7%), Poland (+4.6%) and Slovakia (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Italy emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +13.5% from 2012-2022. Hungary and Serbia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the UK (-1.8%), Spain (-2.1%), Belgium (-4.9%), Ukraine (-6.9%) and France (-10.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Germany (+8.2 p.p.), Italy (+5.9 p.p.), Russia (+2.5 p.p.) and the Netherlands (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Ukraine, Belgium and France saw its share reduced by -2.3%, -5.8% and -10.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest wheat and meslin flour supplying countries in Europe were Germany ($X), Italy ($X) and Belgium ($X), with a combined 46% share of total exports.

Italy, with a CAGR of +16.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, growing by 20% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+4.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Wheat and Meslin Flour

Imports in Europe

In 2022, supplies from abroad of wheat and meslin flour was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, wheat and meslin flour imports soared to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +65.6% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons), distantly followed by France (X tons), Ireland (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Romania (X tons) were the main importers of wheat and meslin flour, together making up 50% of total imports. The following importers - Portugal (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Austria (X tons), Germany (X tons), Poland (X tons), the UK (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) - together made up 26% of total imports.

Imports into the Netherlands decreased at an average annual rate of -1.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Spain (+12.6%), Portugal (+6.4%), Poland (+6.3%), Slovakia (+6.1%), the Czech Republic (+5.8%), the UK (+5.8%), Romania (+5.7%), Ireland (+5.6%), France (+3.5%) and Austria (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Spain emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +12.6% from 2012-2022. Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Belgium (-5.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Spain (+4 p.p.), Ireland (+2.7 p.p.), Romania (+2 p.p.) and France (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Belgium and the Netherlands saw its share reduced by -4% and -6.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest wheat and meslin flour importing markets in Europe were the Netherlands ($X), France ($X) and Ireland ($X), together accounting for 38% of total imports. Spain, Romania, the UK, Belgium, Poland, Germany, Portugal, Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 40%.

Spain, with a CAGR of +13.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 13% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
