Whole Fresh Milk Market Size in Europe

The Europe whole fresh milk market stood at $X in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Germany (X tons), Russia (X tons) and France (X tons), with a combined 39% share of total production. The UK, Poland, the Netherlands, Italy, Ukraine, Ireland, Spain, Belarus, Denmark and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 44%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Ireland (with a CAGR of +5.0%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Whole Fresh Milk Exports

Exports in Europe

In 2022, whole fresh milk exports in Europe shrank to X tons, declining by -2.8% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 7.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, whole fresh milk exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Germany (X tons), Belgium (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), the UK (X tons) and Poland (X tons) was the key exporter of whole fresh milk in Europe, committing 53% of total export. France (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 5.3% share, followed by Austria (5.1%) and Latvia (4.5%). The Netherlands (X tons), Slovenia (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Luxembourg (X tons) and Denmark (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +12.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest whole fresh milk supplying countries in Europe were Germany ($X), Belgium ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), together comprising 35% of total exports. Poland, the UK, Austria, France, the Netherlands, Latvia, Denmark, Slovenia, Hungary and Luxembourg lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 49%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +13.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 19% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Austria ($X per ton) and Denmark ($X per ton), while Latvia ($X per ton) and the UK ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Latvia (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe

In 2022, imports of whole fresh milk in Europe amounted to X tons, increasing by 6.4% against 2021 figures. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 7.1% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, whole fresh milk imports surged to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Germany was the largest importer of whole fresh milk in Europe, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 32% of total imports in 2022. The Netherlands (X tons) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Italy (8.1%), Ireland (7.8%), Lithuania (7.1%) and Belgium (6.9%). The UK (X tons), Croatia (X tons), Romania (X tons), Russia (X tons), Latvia (X tons) and France (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Germany increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Russia (+33.8%), Croatia (+10.5%), the UK (+8.7%), Latvia (+8.3%), Ireland (+8.1%), the Netherlands (+7.3%), Romania (+5.8%) and Lithuania (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +33.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Belgium (-4.0%), France (-8.7%) and Italy (-9.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Germany (+10 p.p.), the Netherlands (+5.9 p.p.), Ireland (+4 p.p.), Russia (+2.3 p.p.), Lithuania (+1.9 p.p.), the UK (+1.7 p.p.) and Croatia (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of France (-2.7 p.p.), Belgium (-4.1 p.p.) and Italy (-16.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported whole fresh milk in Europe, comprising 31% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with an 8.3% share.

In Germany, whole fresh milk imports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (+7.9% per year) and Italy (-8.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%.
