In value terms, wine exports surged to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
The biggest shipments were from Spain (X litres), Italy (X litres) and France (X litres), together resulting at 77% of total export. It was distantly followed by Germany (X litres), creating a 4.7% share of total exports. Portugal (X litres) and Belgium (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Belgium (with a CAGR of +21.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest wine supplying countries in Europe were France ($X), Italy ($X) and Spain ($X), together accounting for 80% of total exports. These countries were followed by Germany, Portugal and Belgium, which together accounted for a further 9.3%.
Belgium, with a CAGR of +15.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in Europe stood at $X per litre in 2021, with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per litre), while Spain ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+3.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Wine Imports
Imports in Europe
In 2021, the amount of wine imported in Europe dropped modestly to X litres, falling by -2.2% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 3.2%. The volume of import peaked at X litres in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, wine imports expanded notably to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Germany (X litres) and the UK (X litres) represented roughly 37% of total imports in 2021. France (X litres) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 8.6% share, followed by the Netherlands (6.9%), Belgium (5.5%) and Russia (5.5%). Italy (X litres), Portugal (X litres), Denmark (X litres), Sweden (X litres), Switzerland (X litres), Poland (X litres) and the Czech Republic (X litres) took a relatively small share of total imports.

In value terms, the largest wine importing markets in Europe were the UK ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together accounting for 46% of total imports. These countries were followed by Belgium, Switzerland, Russia, France, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic and Portugal, which together accounted for a further 39%.
Poland, with a CAGR of +7.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per litre in 2021, surging by 17% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per litre), while Portugal ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+8.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
