The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, wood chips and particles exports soared to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the four major exporters of wood chips and particles, namely Russia, Latvia, Belarus and Germany, represented more than half of total export. Slovenia (X cubic meters) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Estonia (X cubic meters) and Lithuania (X cubic meters). All these countries together held approx. 17% share of total exports. France (X cubic meters), Belgium (X cubic meters), Norway (X cubic meters), Sweden (X cubic meters) and Austria (X cubic meters) took a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Lithuania (with a CAGR of +20.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest wood chips and particles supplying countries in Europe were Latvia ($X), Russia ($X) and Germany ($X), together accounting for 45% of total exports. France, Belarus, Slovenia, Estonia, Lithuania, Belgium, Sweden, Austria and Norway lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.
Lithuania, with a CAGR of +14.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per cubic meter, increasing by 12% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 13% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per cubic meter. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per cubic meter), while Belarus ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Latvia (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Wood Chips And Particles
Imports in Europe
In 2022, purchases abroad of wood chips and particles decreased by -9.5% to X cubic meters, falling for the third consecutive year after four years of growth. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X cubic meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, wood chips and particles imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +38.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Poland (X cubic meters), Denmark (X cubic meters), Sweden (X cubic meters), Portugal (X cubic meters), Austria (X cubic meters), Finland (X cubic meters), Belgium (X cubic meters), France (X cubic meters), Germany (X cubic meters), Italy (X cubic meters), Lithuania (X cubic meters) and Switzerland (X cubic meters) represented roughly 89% of total imports in 2022.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Belgium (with a CAGR of +28.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Portugal ($X), Denmark ($X) and Finland ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 41% share of total imports. Sweden, Austria, France, Poland, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Lithuania and Switzerland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 42%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Belgium, with a CAGR of +19.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per cubic meter, picking up by 37% against the previous year. Import price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, wood chips and particles import price increased by +56.5% against 2020 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per cubic meter), while Poland ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
