Total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -0.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 14%. The volume of export peaked at X cubic meters in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
In value terms, exports of wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates expanded markedly to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +77.3% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In 2021, Latvia (X cubic meters), Germany (X cubic meters) and Russia (X cubic meters) was the key exporter of wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates in Europe, creating 38% of total export. It was distantly followed by Estonia (X cubic meters), Belarus (X cubic meters) and Austria (X cubic meters), together mixing up a 16% share of total exports. The following exporters - Belgium (X cubic meters), Ukraine (X cubic meters), Sweden (X cubic meters), Poland (X cubic meters), the Czech Republic (X cubic meters), Norway (X cubic meters) and Portugal (X cubic meters) - together made up 24% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Belarus (with a CAGR of +18.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates supplying countries in Europe were Latvia ($X), Russia ($X) and Germany ($X), together accounting for 32% of total exports. These countries were followed by Estonia, Austria, Belgium, Poland, the Czech Republic, Portugal, Sweden, Ukraine, Belarus and Norway, which together accounted for a further 39%.
Belarus, with a CAGR of +15.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per cubic meter in 2021, with an increase of 6.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 15% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per cubic meter), while Norway (less than $X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+7.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe
In 2021, the amount of wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates imported in Europe stood at X cubic meters, growing by 2.4% against 2020. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -0.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 18% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X cubic meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, imports of wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates rose notably to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +68.4% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
The UK represented the largest importing country with an import of about X cubic meters, which recorded 32% of total imports. Denmark (X cubic meters) held an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the Netherlands (9.6%), Italy (8.4%), Germany (5.6%), Austria (4.9%), Belgium (4.6%) and France (4.6%).
The UK was also the fastest-growing in terms of the wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates imports, with a CAGR of +22.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, France (+11.9%), the Netherlands (+7.7%), Austria (+6.8%), Denmark (+4.8%) and Italy (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Germany (-1.8%) and Belgium (-7.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the UK and France increased by +23 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the UK ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates in Europe, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Denmark, with an 11% share.
In the UK, imports of wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates expanded at an average annual rate of +22.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (+10.4% per year) and Denmark (+4.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per cubic meter in 2021, increasing by 5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the import price increased by 9.5%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per cubic meter), while Austria ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
