Woven Carpet Market Size in Europe

In 2022, the Europe woven carpet market decreased by -3.2% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total consumption indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +51.1% against 2018 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then fell slightly in the following year.

In value terms, woven carpet production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Europe

In 2022, overseas shipments of woven carpets and other woven textile coverings decreased by -25.2% to X square meters for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X square meters, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, woven carpet exports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 24% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

Belgium represented the main exporter of woven carpets and other woven textile coverings in Europe, with the volume of exports accounting for X square meters, which was near 30% of total exports in 2022. Germany (X square meters) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Poland (X square meters), the Netherlands (X square meters), Bulgaria (X square meters) and Sweden (X square meters). All these countries together took approx. 39% share of total exports. Belarus (X square meters), Spain (X square meters), Ukraine (X square meters), Denmark (X square meters), Austria (X square meters), France (X square meters) and Italy (X square meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Belgium decreased at an average annual rate of -4.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Bulgaria (+34.0%), Poland (+6.3%), Belarus (+6.0%), France (+5.0%), Austria (+5.0%), Ukraine (+3.9%), the Netherlands (+3.6%), Spain (+2.9%), Germany (+2.2%), Sweden (+2.0%) and Denmark (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bulgaria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +34.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Italy (-1.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Bulgaria, Poland, Germany, Belarus and the Netherlands increased by +6, +3.9, +2.3, +1.9 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest woven carpet supplying countries in Europe were Belgium ($X), Germany ($X) and Poland ($X), with a combined 49% share of total exports. Sweden, the Netherlands, Spain, Denmark, Bulgaria, Italy, Austria, Belarus, France and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.

Among the main exporting countries, Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +40.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per square meter in 2022, increasing by 11% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per square meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per square meter), while Ukraine ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bulgaria (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of woven carpets and other woven textile coverings, when their volume decreased by -13.9% to X square meters. Total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +43.1% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X square meters, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, woven carpet imports declined to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Germany (X square meters), distantly followed by the UK (X square meters), France (X square meters), Poland (X square meters), Russia (X square meters), the Netherlands (X square meters) and Sweden (X square meters) were the largest importers of woven carpets and other woven textile coverings, together achieving 61% of total imports. Spain (X square meters), Italy (X square meters), Belgium (X square meters), Romania (X square meters), Austria (X square meters) and Bulgaria (X square meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +23.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest woven carpet importing markets in Europe were Germany ($X), the UK ($X) and France ($X), together accounting for 40% of total imports. Poland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Spain, Russia, Italy, Austria, Belgium, Romania and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.

Among the main importing countries, Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +22.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per square meter in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the import price increased by 3.2%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per square meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per square meter), while Russia ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+3.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
