Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a deep downturn. The volume of export peaked at X square meters in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Italy was the largest exporter of woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste in Europe, with the volume of exports amounting to X square meters, which was near 57% of total exports in 2021. France (X square meters) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 11% share, followed by the UK (9.1%), Spain (7.6%) and Romania (5.4%). The following exporters - Germany (X square meters) and the Netherlands (X square meters) - each finished at a 4.1% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to silk fabric exports from Italy stood at -6.7%. At the same time, the Netherlands (+9.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +9.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Spain (-2.7%), Romania (-5.1%), France (-9.0%), the UK (-10.0%) and Germany (-20.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Italy (+8.4 p.p.), Spain (+3.2 p.p.) and the Netherlands (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of the UK (-1.6 p.p.) and Germany (-5.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the largest silk fabric supplier in Europe, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by the UK, with a 5.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Italy stood at -7.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (-8.2% per year) and the UK (-9.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per square meter, waning by -6.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 16%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per square meter), while Spain ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+2.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, purchases abroad of woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste decreased by -1.6% to X square meters, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 5.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X square meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, silk fabric imports stood at $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 11% against the previous year. Italy represented the key importing country with an import of about X square meters, which recorded 36% of total imports. The Netherlands (X square meters), Bulgaria (X square meters), Germany (X square meters), Spain (X square meters), Poland (X square meters) and Russia (X square meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

By contrast, Poland (-1.6%), the UK (-4.5%), Romania (-4.6%), Portugal (-7.5%), France (-10.7%), Russia (-15.5%), Spain (-20.2%) and Germany (-20.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the UK (+7.2 p.p.), Romania (+3.3 p.p.), the Netherlands (+1.9 p.p.), Italy (+1.7 p.p.) and Bulgaria (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Spain (-3.7 p.p.) and Germany (-4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Italy ($X), France ($X) and the UK ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 65% of total imports. These countries were followed by Romania, Bulgaria, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Poland, Portugal and Russia, which together accounted for a further 24%.

In terms of the main importing countries, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +3.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
