Yams Market Size in Europe

For the third consecutive year, the Europe yams market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 4.3% to $X in 2022. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Yams Production in Europe

In value terms, yams production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a slight contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 117%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Portugal (X tons) remains the largest yams producing country in Europe, accounting for 90% of total volume. Moreover, yams production in Portugal exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Spain (X tons), more than tenfold.

In Portugal, yams production increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Spain (-8.5% per year) and Denmark (+28.7% per year).

The average yams yield contracted significantly to X tons per ha in 2022, reducing by -15.8% against the previous year. Overall, the yield, however, showed modest growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 114% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the yams yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of yams production in Europe contracted modestly to X ha, remaining relatively unchanged against 2021 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 12%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Yams Exports

Exports in Europe

In 2022, approx. X tons of yams were exported in Europe; reducing by -61.6% on the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed moderate growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 416% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, yams exports fell remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 245%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) and Italy (X tons) represented the main exporters of yams in Europe, together finishing at near 72% of total exports. It was distantly followed by France (X tons), the UK (X tons) and Spain (X tons), together mixing up a 24% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +59.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest yams supplying countries in Europe were the Netherlands ($X), Italy ($X) and France ($X), together accounting for 87% of total exports. Spain and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 9.2%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Spain, with a CAGR of +59.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 37% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Yams Imports

Imports in Europe

In 2022, imports of yams in Europe declined rapidly to X tons, waning by -19% compared with 2021. Total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -25.4% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 73%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, yams imports contracted to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 56%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

The UK was the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 48% of total imports. France (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 24% share, followed by the Netherlands (14%) and Italy (7.2%). Belgium (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for France (with a CAGR of +5.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the UK ($X), France ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 83% of total imports.

France, with a CAGR of +4.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 6.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in the Netherlands ($X per ton) and Italy ($X per ton), while the UK ($X per ton) and Belgium ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+4.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
