Woolen Yarn Market Size in Europe

In 2021, the Europe woolen yarn market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, saw a mild reduction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of yarn of wool were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable slump. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, woolen yarn exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight setback. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Italy (X tons), distantly followed by Lithuania (X tons), Germany (X tons), Romania (X tons), the UK (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons), Poland (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) represented the key exporters of yarn of wool, together generating 80% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Lithuania (with a CAGR of +7.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the largest woolen yarn supplier in Europe, comprising 38% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Romania, with an 8.1% share.

In Italy, woolen yarn exports contracted by an average annual rate of -1.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-1.7% per year) and Romania (+2.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 3.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 20% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Lithuania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+5.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe

In 2021, purchases abroad of yarn of wool was finally on the rise to reach X tons after five years of decline. Overall, imports, however, saw a noticeable slump. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, woolen yarn imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Italy (X tons) and the UK (X tons) represented the major importers of yarn of wool in Europe, together accounting for approx. 37% of total imports. Germany (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Denmark (7.1%) and Norway (5.4%). Belgium (X tons), Austria (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Lithuania (X tons), Portugal (X tons), Estonia (X tons) and France (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Estonia (with a CAGR of +28.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest woolen yarn importing markets in Europe were Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and the UK ($X), together comprising 47% of total imports. Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Austria, France, Portugal, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Belgium and Estonia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.

Denmark, with a CAGR of +14.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 2.1% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 13% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Estonia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Denmark (+11.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
