The Europe yoghurt market reduced modestly to $X in 2022, waning by -3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

In value terms, yoghurt production fell slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in overseas shipments of yoghurt, when their volume decreased by -3.5% to X tons. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 7.3% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined slightly in the following year.
In value terms, yoghurt exports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 13% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.
Exports by Country
Germany represented the major exporter of yoghurt in Europe, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 33% of total exports in 2022. France (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Greece (8.1%), Austria (7%), Spain (6.1%) and Belgium (5.5%). The Czech Republic (X tons), Poland (X tons), Romania (X tons), Finland (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to yoghurt exports from Germany stood at +2.2%. At the same time, Belarus (+24.2%), Romania (+17.6%), Greece (+14.8%), the Netherlands (+7.5%) and Belgium (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +24.2% from 2012-2022. Spain experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Finland (-1.2%), Poland (-1.6%), the Czech Republic (-2.6%), Austria (-3.1%) and France (-5.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Greece, Germany and Romania increased by +6, +5 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest yoghurt supplier in Europe, comprising 31% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Greece, with a 12% share.
In Germany, yoghurt exports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (-4.1% per year) and Greece (+11.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -2.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Greece ($X per ton), while Finland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+2.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe
In 2022, overseas purchases of yoghurt decreased by -3.1% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 5% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year.
In value terms, yoghurt imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 8.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the UK (X tons), distantly followed by Italy (X tons), Spain (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Germany (X tons), Portugal (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) represented the major importers of yoghurt, together creating 73% of total imports. France (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Austria (X tons), Ireland (X tons) and Finland (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Hungary (with a CAGR of +9.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the UK ($X), Italy ($X) and Spain ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 40% of total imports. The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Portugal, Sweden, France, Ireland, Austria, Hungary and Finland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 44%.
Hungary, with a CAGR of +8.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -2.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the import price increased by 7.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
