For the fifth consecutive year, the Finnish banana and plantain market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -19% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption showed a mild shrinkage. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Overall, total imports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -24.3% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 34%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, banana and plantain imports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a slight decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Costa Rica (X tons), Panama (X tons) and Ecuador (X tons) were the main suppliers of banana and plantain imports to Finland, with a combined 88% share of total imports. Peru, the Netherlands, Colombia and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 12%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Peru (with a CAGR of +23.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Costa Rica ($X) constituted the largest supplier of bananas and plantains to Finland, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Panama ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Ecuador, with a 19% share.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Panama ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+21.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
