In 2021, the Finnish non-medical x-ray market decreased by -54.1% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The exports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Germany (X tons) was the main destination for non-medical x-ray exports from Finland, with a 82% share of total exports. Moreover, non-medical x-ray exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Australia (X tons), more than tenfold. Russia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Germany totaled +48.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Australia (+36.9% per year) and Russia (+19.5% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for non-medical x-rays exports from Finland, comprising 31% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Australia ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Russia, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany stood at +24.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Australia (+12.8% per year) and Russia (+2.6% per year).

The average non-medical x-ray export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -19.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a dramatic curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of non-medical x-rays decreased by -31.7% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports, however, showed a modest expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 153%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-medical x-ray imports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 123%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

China (X tons), Germany (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main suppliers of non-medical x-ray imports to Finland, with a combined 54% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Sweden, Japan, South Korea, the UK, Denmark and the Netherlands, which together accounted for a further 38%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Japan (with a CAGR of +54.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
