In 2022, the Finnish nonwoven fabric market decreased by -3.6% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 447%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, nonwoven fabric exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a tangible expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons) was the main destination for nonwoven fabric exports from Finland, with a 53% share of total exports. Moreover, nonwoven fabric exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Poland (X tons), twofold. Sweden (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 20% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Germany amounted to -1.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (+5.2% per year) and Sweden (+3.1% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X), Ireland ($X) and the UK ($X) were the largest markets for nonwoven fabric exported from Finland worldwide, with a combined 41% share of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, Ireland, with a CAGR of +63.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average nonwoven fabric export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 143% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 182%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of nonwoven fabrics, when their volume decreased by -4.9% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a notable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 855% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, nonwoven fabric imports reached $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +72.9% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 22%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Italy (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Greece (X tons) were the main suppliers of nonwoven fabric imports to Finland, with a combined 46% share of total imports. France, Luxembourg, the Czech Republic, Hungary, China, Sweden, the Netherlands, Turkey, Belgium and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 36%.
