In 2021, the Finnish semiconductor LED market decreased by -9.5% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a strong increase. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, semiconductor LED production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, posted mild growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 393%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Finland

In 2021, exports of semiconductor light emitting diodes (LEDs) from Finland soared to X units, jumping by 53% on 2020. Overall, exports, however, saw a noticeable descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 239% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, semiconductor LED exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 126%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Sweden (X units) was the main destination for semiconductor LED exports from Finland, accounting for a 41% share of total exports. Moreover, semiconductor LED exports to Sweden exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (X units), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Hong Kong SAR (X units), with a 6.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Sweden totaled +20.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+48.8% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+82.5% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X), Sweden ($X) and the UK ($X) were the largest markets for semiconductor LED exported from Finland worldwide, together accounting for 59% of total exports. Estonia, China, Germany, Lithuania, Hong Kong SAR, Norway, France, Latvia, Singapore and Australia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.

Among the main countries of destination, Hong Kong SAR, with a CAGR of +41.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average semiconductor LED export price amounted to $X per unit, waning by -21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a noticeable decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 227% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Hong Kong SAR ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+5.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Finland

In 2021, purchases abroad of semiconductor light emitting diodes (LEDs) increased by 26% to X units, rising for the fifth consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 334%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, semiconductor LED imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +38.5% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Germany (X units) constituted the largest supplier of semiconductor LED to Finland, with a 76% share of total imports. Moreover, semiconductor LED imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X units), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Netherlands (X units), with a 7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Germany totaled +89.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+20.6% per year) and the Netherlands (+49.7% per year).

In value terms, the largest semiconductor LED suppliers to Finland were Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and China ($X), together accounting for 74% of total imports. These countries were followed by Sweden, Lithuania and Estonia, which together accounted for a further 8%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Lithuania, with a CAGR of +54.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average semiconductor LED import price amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -7% against the previous year. In general, the import price faced a dramatic curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 16%. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per unit), while the price for Germany ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (+4.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
