In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of sparkling wine, when their volume increased by 68% to X litres. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The exports peaked at X litres in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sparkling wine exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +109.0% against 2020 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Estonia (X litres) was the main destination for sparkling wine exports from Finland, accounting for a 70% share of total exports. Moreover, sparkling wine exports to Estonia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Russia (X litres), sixfold. Germany (X litres) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Estonia amounted to +7.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (-8.8% per year) and Germany (+16.4% per year).

In value terms, Estonia ($X) remains the key foreign market for sparkling wine exports from Finland, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with an 8.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Estonia totaled +9.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (-9.9% per year) and Germany (+32.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average sparkling wine export price amounted to $X per litre, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 29%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per litre, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Latvia ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+13.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Finland

Sparkling wine imports into Finland contracted to X litres in 2022, shrinking by -5.9% on 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X litres in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sparkling wine imports dropped modestly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Italy (X litres), Spain (X litres) and France (X litres) were the main suppliers of sparkling wine imports to Finland, with a combined 87% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Italy (with a CAGR of +11.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($X), Italy ($X) and Spain ($X) were the largest sparkling wine suppliers to Finland, with a combined 91% share of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, Italy, with a CAGR of +12.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average sparkling wine import price stood at $X per litre in 2022, rising by 5.8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 13% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per litre), while the price for Germany ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
