In 2021, overseas shipments of wood charcoal decreased by -28.9% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 284%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, wood charcoal exports fell markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 378% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Estonia (X tons) was the main destination for wood charcoal exports from Finland, accounting for a 58% share of total exports. Moreover, wood charcoal exports to Estonia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Lithuania (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Sweden (X tons), with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Estonia amounted to +67.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Lithuania (+34.1% per year) and Sweden (+42.2% per year).
In value terms, Estonia ($X) remains the key foreign market for wood charcoal exports from Finland, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Lithuania ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Sweden, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Estonia stood at +64.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Lithuania (+33.7% per year) and Sweden (+43.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average wood charcoal export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 6.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 60%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Lithuania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+101.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Finland
Wood charcoal imports into Finland expanded rapidly to X tons in 2021, picking up by 13% on 2020 figures. Overall, imports posted buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 95% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, wood charcoal imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +98.9% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 55%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Poland (X tons) constituted the largest wood charcoal supplier to Finland, with a 51% share of total imports. Moreover, wood charcoal imports from Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Estonia (X tons), fivefold. Russia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Poland stood at +15.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Estonia (-9.7% per year) and Russia (-0.6% per year).
In value terms, Poland ($X) constituted the largest supplier of wood charcoal to Finland, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Lithuania ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Estonia, with a 7.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Poland totaled +14.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Lithuania (+106.8% per year) and Estonia (-15.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average wood charcoal import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 36%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Estonia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lithuania (+3.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
