Apricot Market Size in France

For the third year in a row, the French apricot market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -5.6% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, showed a perceptible descent. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Apricot Production in France

In value terms, apricot production shrank slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 79% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The average yield of apricots in France skyrocketed to X tons per ha in 2022, with an increase of 27% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, the yield, however, saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the average apricot yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The apricot harvested area in France was estimated at X ha in 2022, approximately reflecting the year before. In general, the harvested area, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 1.4% against the previous year. The apricot harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of apricots increased by 3.5% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, exports, however, showed a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 37%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, apricot exports fell sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Germany (X tons), Switzerland (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main destinations of apricot exports from France, together comprising 67% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Switzerland (with a CAGR of -3.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, the largest markets for apricot exported from France were Germany ($X), Switzerland ($X) and Belgium ($X), with a combined 75% share of total exports.

Overall, export price indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Imports into France

In 2022, the amount of apricots imported into France reduced dramatically to X tons, falling by -37.9% on 2021 figures. In general, imports showed a pronounced shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, apricot imports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 64%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of apricot to France, accounting for a 82% share of total imports. Moreover, apricot imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), sixfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Spain stood at -2.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+23.9% per year) and Germany (-1.2% per year).

Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
