In 2021, the French aromatic alcohols market increased by 22% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In value terms, aromatic alcohols exports reduced slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed strong growth. Spain (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of aromatic alcohols exports from France, with a combined 63% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Switzerland, the UK, Singapore, the United States, Turkey, Belgium and Canada, which together accounted for a further 24%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Singapore (with a CAGR of +89.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for aromatic alcohols exported from France were Germany ($X), Singapore ($X) and Spain ($X), together accounting for 59% of total exports.

Singapore, with a CAGR of +108.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average aromatic alcohols export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 10% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 38%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, purchases abroad of aromatic alcohols and their derivatives was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -37.0% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 81% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, aromatic alcohols imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 78% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of aromatic alcohols to France, accounting for a 38% share of total imports. Moreover, aromatic alcohols imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by China (X tons), with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Germany amounted to +10.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+5.4% per year) and China (+8.5% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of aromatic alcohols and their derivatives to France, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 7.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Germany amounted to +21.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+10.9% per year) and the Netherlands (+7.8% per year).

The average aromatic alcohols import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 17% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, aromatic alcohols import price increased by +89.4% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average import price increased by 41%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
