Buckwheat Market Size in France

In 2022, the French buckwheat market decreased by -0.6% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, the total consumption indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. In value terms, buckwheat exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports posted strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 173% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Belgium (X tons) was the main destination for buckwheat exports from France, with a 51% share of total exports. Moreover, buckwheat exports to Belgium exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (X tons), threefold. The Netherlands (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Belgium totaled +58.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+91.5% per year) and the Netherlands (+156.6% per year).

Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a slight decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, buckwheat imports fell significantly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a moderate increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 85%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

In 2022, Lithuania (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of buckwheat to France, accounting for a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, buckwheat imports from Lithuania exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Latvia (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Czech Republic (X tons), with a 7.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Lithuania amounted to +18.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Latvia (+0.5% per year) and the Czech Republic (+33.0% per year).

In value terms, Lithuania ($X) constituted the largest supplier of buckwheat to France, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Latvia ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with a 7.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Lithuania totaled +23.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Latvia (+16.2% per year) and Poland (-4.6% per year).

In 2022, the average buckwheat import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 5.3% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, buckwheat import price increased by +83.0% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 38%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Latvia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
