The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 45%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, carbon dioxide exports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 88% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Spain (X tons) was the main destination for carbon dioxide exports from France, with a 44% share of total exports. Moreover, carbon dioxide exports to Spain exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (X tons), threefold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Spain totaled +22.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+28.2% per year) and Germany (+7.7% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for carbon dioxide exports from France, comprising 38% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Switzerland ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with a 9.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany totaled +11.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Switzerland (+22.9% per year) and Spain (+20.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average carbon dioxide export price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -16.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, carbon dioxide export price decreased by -21.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 47% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (+51.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into France
In 2022, supplies from abroad of carbon dioxide decreased by -50.9% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports saw a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, carbon dioxide imports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a measured increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 69% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined dramatically in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest carbon dioxide supplier to France, accounting for a 85% share of total imports. Moreover, carbon dioxide imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Trinidad and Tobago (X tons), tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Mauritius (X tons), with a 1.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Netherlands totaled -5.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Trinidad and Tobago (+8.9% per year) and Mauritius (+13.0% per year).
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of carbon dioxide to France, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 1.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Trinidad and Tobago, with a 0.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the Netherlands totaled +12.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mauritius (+28.7% per year) and Trinidad and Tobago (+4.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average carbon dioxide import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 46% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 51%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Trinidad and Tobago ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
