Chestnut Market Size in France

After three years of growth, the French chestnut market decreased by -29.7% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Chestnut consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank significantly in the following year.

Chestnut Production in France

In value terms, chestnut production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. In value terms, chestnut exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Germany (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main destinations of chestnut exports from France, with a combined 59% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Switzerland, Portugal, Belgium and the UK, which together accounted for a further 36%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Portugal (with a CAGR of +18.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the average export price increased by 16% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of chestnuts, when their volume decreased by -40.5% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 93% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chestnut imports shrank remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 102% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

Spain (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) were the main suppliers of chestnut imports to France, together comprising 92% of total imports. Chile, Albania and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 6.4%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Albania (with a CAGR of +127.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
