Germany (X tons) was the main destination for denatured ethyl alcohol exports from France, with a 46% share of total exports. For the third year in a row, France recorded growth in overseas purchases of denatured ethyl alcohol and other denatured spirits, which increased by 11% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 91% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, denatured ethyl alcohol imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports posted tangible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 80% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Belgium (X tons) constituted the largest denatured ethyl alcohol supplier to France, accounting for a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, denatured ethyl alcohol imports from Belgium exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Switzerland (X tons), threefold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Belgium stood at +6.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Switzerland (+31.1% per year) and Germany (-1.5% per year).

Hungary, with a CAGR of +115.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average denatured ethyl alcohol import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 16% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a noticeable setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 61%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
