Fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine exports from France rose notably to X tons in 2021, surging by 11% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 28% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 179%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Germany (X tons), Switzerland (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) were the main destinations of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine exports from France, with a combined 74% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Italy, Hungary, Senegal, Spain, the UK and Poland, which together accounted for a further 22%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Hungary (with a CAGR of +83.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Belgium ($X), Germany ($X) and Switzerland ($X) constituted the largest markets for fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine exported from France worldwide, together comprising 50% of total exports. Senegal, Hungary, Spain, Italy, the UK and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.
Spain, with a CAGR of +46.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average export price for fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines amounted to $X per ton, growing by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 123%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+11.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine and Iodine
Imports into France
In 2021, purchases abroad of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines increased by 3.4% to X tons for the first time since 2014, thus ending a six-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 14% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a perceptible reduction. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Belgium (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine to France, accounting for a 55% share of total imports. Moreover, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine imports from Belgium exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Jordan (X tons), with a 9.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Belgium stood at +3.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+1.4% per year) and Jordan (-6.9% per year).
In value terms, Belgium ($X) constituted the largest supplier of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines to France, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 5.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Belgium totaled +15.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (-4.8% per year) and the Netherlands (+0.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average import price for fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 25% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine import price increased by +93.4% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while the price for Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
