Graphite Market Size in France

In 2021, the French graphite market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of graphite (natural) decreased by -77.3% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports showed a deep setback. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Brazil (X tons), Switzerland (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main destinations of graphite exports from France, together accounting for 79% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in China (with a CAGR of +118.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the key foreign market for graphite exports from France, comprising 39% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with an 8.1% share.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Switzerland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (+46.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into France

After three years of decline, supplies from abroad of graphite (natural) increased by 18% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, graphite imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 37%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Spain (X tons), Germany (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of graphite imports to France, together accounting for 91% of total imports. Brazil, China and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 5.7%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +35.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
