Imports into France
In 2021, purchases abroad of hazelnuts was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 71%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, hazelnut imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a modest increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 109%. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Italy (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of hazelnut imports to France, with a combined 72% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of +149.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of hazelnut to France, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bulgaria ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 12% share.

Based on 2021 figures, hazelnut import price increased by +69.0% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 67%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bulgaria (+186.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
