In 2021, overseas shipments of industrial robots for multiple uses were finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 59% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, industrial robot exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -9.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 35%. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Germany (X units), the United States (X units) and China (X units) were the main destinations of industrial robot exports from France, with a combined 39% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Spain, Poland, the Czech Republic, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, the UK, Switzerland, Turkey and Mexico, which together accounted for a further 39%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +57.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for industrial robot exported from France were China ($X), Germany ($X) and the United States ($X), with a combined 54% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Mexico, Poland, the Netherlands, the UK, the Czech Republic and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 29%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +51.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average industrial robot export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, increasing by 13% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a slight decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 14% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mexico (+9.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into France
In 2021, the amount of industrial robots for multiple uses imported into France rose sharply to X units, increasing by 6% against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -24.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, industrial robot imports amounted to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -5.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 32%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X units) constituted the largest industrial robot supplier to France, with a 32% share of total imports. Moreover, industrial robot imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X units), twofold. Belgium (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany amounted to +5.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+13.5% per year) and Belgium (+48.4% per year).
In value terms, the largest industrial robot suppliers to France were Germany ($X), Belgium ($X) and Italy ($X), with a combined 46% share of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, Belgium, with a CAGR of +52.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average industrial robot import price stood at $X per unit in 2021, rising by 6.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per unit), while the price for Germany ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+2.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
