In 2022, overseas shipments of jute and jute-like fibers were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, showed a perceptible downturn. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, jute and jute-like fibers exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a tangible expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 127% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Poland (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) were the main destinations of jute and jute-like fibers exports from France, with a combined 60% share of total exports. Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, the UK, Belgium, the United States and China lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Sweden (with a CAGR of +309.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the UK ($X), Poland ($X) and Morocco ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for jute and jute-like fibers exported from France worldwide, together accounting for 57% of total exports. Algeria, Germany, the United States, Belgium, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark and China lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.
Among the main countries of destination, Sweden, with a CAGR of +325.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average jute and jute-like fibers export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -8.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 160%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Denmark ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+31.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Jute And Jute-Like Fibers
Imports into France
In 2022, supplies from abroad of jute and jute-like fibers increased by 25% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 58% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, jute and jute-like fibers imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a temperate increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Belgium (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of jute and jute-like fibers to France, accounting for a 57% share of total imports. Moreover, jute and jute-like fibers imports from Belgium exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Portugal (X tons), with a 9.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Belgium stood at -6.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+17.6% per year) and Portugal (+5.5% per year).
In value terms, Belgium ($X) constituted the largest supplier of jute and jute-like fibers to France, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Austria ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 7.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Belgium totaled -2.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (+62.2% per year) and Spain (+10.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average jute and jute-like fibers import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 9.8% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, jute and jute-like fibers import price increased by +40.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 21% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+19.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
