In 2022, overseas purchases of maize decreased by -12.8% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a modest increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 74% against the previous year. In value terms, maize imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +82.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 59%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In 2022, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest maize supplier to France, accounting for a 39% share of total imports. Moreover, maize imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Netherlands (X tons), with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany amounted to -4.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+22.6% per year) and the Netherlands (+13.4% per year).
