In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the French market for manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences, when its value decreased by -11% to $X. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Belgium (X tons) was the main destination for manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences exports from France, with a 32% share of total exports. Moreover, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences exports to Belgium exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Poland (X tons), threefold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9% share.

Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 57% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences imports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last nine years.
