Propene Market Size in France

After two years of decline, the French propene market increased by 15% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, showed a pronounced decline. Propene consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

In value terms, propene exports contracted to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 44%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

The Netherlands (X tons) was the main destination for propene exports from France, accounting for a 59% share of total exports. Moreover, propene exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Belgium (X tons), twofold. Spain (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to the Netherlands amounted to +8.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (-11.8% per year) and Spain (+126.4% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for propene (propylene) exports from France, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with a 25% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to the Netherlands stood at +6.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (-12.9% per year) and Spain (+101.7% per year).

In 2021, the average propene export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 55% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a mild slump. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+3.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into France

In 2021, propene imports into France expanded markedly to X tons, increasing by 12% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 153%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, propene imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 90%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Italy (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) were the main suppliers of propene imports to France, with a combined 80% share of total imports. Serbia, Bulgaria, the UK, the Netherlands and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +62.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average propene import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 49% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a slight setback. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Belgium ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton), while the price for Bulgaria ($X per ton) and Serbia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bulgaria (+7.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
