Exports by Country
Italy (X tons) was the main destination for cattle hide and skin exports from France, accounting for a 74% share of total exports. Moreover, cattle hide and skin exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, China (X tons), sixfold. Spain (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Italy was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (+2.5% per year) and Spain (-0.1% per year).
In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the key foreign market for raw hides and skins of cattle exports from France, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with a 4.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Italy amounted to -6.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (-1.8% per year) and Spain (+0.4% per year).

Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable slump. Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Spain ($X per ton) and Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+0.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Imports of Raw Hides And Skins of Cattle
Imports into France
After two years of decline, purchases abroad of raw hides and skins of cattle increased by 12% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 47% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, cattle hide and skin imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight decline. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The UK (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of cattle hide and skin imports to France, together accounting for 70% of total imports. Ireland, Switzerland, Spain, the Netherlands, Canada and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Ireland (with a CAGR of +53.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the UK ($X), Italy ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest cattle hide and skin suppliers to France, together comprising 63% of total imports. Germany, Switzerland, Ireland, Belgium, Spain and Canada lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Ireland, with a CAGR of +39.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average cattle hide and skin import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
