In 2021, the French rice bran market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, recorded a pronounced contraction. Rice bran consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Rice Bran Production in France
In value terms, rice bran production rose significantly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 22%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of rice bran decreased by -6.8% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +48.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, rice bran exports rose significantly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Belgium (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main destinations of rice bran exports from France, with a combined 89% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Germany and Switzerland, which together accounted for a further 9.9%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Switzerland (with a CAGR of +117.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Belgium ($X), Spain ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for rice bran exported from France worldwide, with a combined 74% share of total exports. Germany and Switzerland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 5.8%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Switzerland, with a CAGR of +40.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average rice bran export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 20% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a perceptible decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Switzerland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (-2.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into France
In 2021, imports of rice bran into France rose markedly to X tons, surging by 12% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, rice bran imports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Belgium (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Luxembourg (X tons) were the main suppliers of rice bran imports to France, together comprising 71% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Luxembourg (with a CAGR of +225.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Belgium ($X) constituted the largest supplier of rice bran to France, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Luxembourg ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Belgium totaled +5.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Luxembourg (+217.0% per year) and Germany (-10.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average rice bran import price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -6.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the price for Suriname ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+8.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
