Imports into France
In 2022, overseas purchases of rye decreased by -25.8% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, imports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 168% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, rye imports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 115% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of rye to France, with a 54% share of total imports. Moreover, rye imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Austria (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Spain (X tons), with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany stood at +4.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (+14.5% per year) and Spain (-2.0% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of rye to France, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Austria ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 5.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Germany stood at +4.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (+17.8% per year) and Spain (+2.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average rye import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -1.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the average import price increased by 116% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
