The French saccharin market shrank sharply to $X in 2021, which is down by -52.9% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption, however, enjoyed temperate growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

Exports from France
In 2021, saccharin exports from France skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 45% on 2020 figures. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 73% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, saccharin exports totaled $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 46%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Brazil (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main destinations of saccharin exports from France, together comprising 52% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +42.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for saccharin exported from France were Russia ($X), Germany ($X) and Italy ($X), together accounting for 41% of total exports. These countries were followed by Brazil, Ukraine, Ireland, Algeria, the UK, Spain, Belgium and Switzerland, which together accounted for a further 40%.
Brazil, with a CAGR of +45.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average saccharin export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -22.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a slight decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 41% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Turkey (+19.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Saccharin Imports
Imports into France
In 2021, the amount of saccharin and its salts imported into France reduced sharply to X tons, declining by -42.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw noticeable growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 65% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, saccharin imports contracted remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 43%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest saccharin supplier to France, with a 40% share of total imports. Moreover, saccharin imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by South Korea (X tons), with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Germany totaled +9.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+8.8% per year) and South Korea (-8.4% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X), Spain ($X) and South Korea ($X) appeared to be the largest saccharin suppliers to France, with a combined 70% share of total imports. These countries were followed by China, Belgium, the Netherlands, Ireland and Switzerland, which together accounted for a further 26%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Belgium, with a CAGR of +63.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average saccharin import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average import price increased by 29%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+5.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
