In 2022, the French sesame seed market decreased by -16.4% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. Overall, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sesame seed exports rose to $X in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +89.8% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 38%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

The UK (X tons), India (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) were the main destinations of sesame seed exports from France, with a combined 49% share of total exports.

Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into France

In 2022, the amount of sesame seed imported into France declined sharply to X tons, falling by -18.2% on the year before. In general, imports recorded a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sesame seed imports fell to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 27% against the previous year.
