Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 94%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, shelled hazelnut exports reduced sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Belgium (X tons), Luxembourg (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) were the main destinations of shelled hazelnut exports from France, together accounting for 60% of total exports. These countries were followed by Spain, Germany, Switzerland, New Caledonia, Italy, the UK, Greece and the Netherlands, which together accounted for a further 33%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Greece (with a CAGR of +96.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Luxembourg ($X), Belgium ($X) and Spain ($X) constituted the largest markets for shelled hazelnut exported from France worldwide, together accounting for 59% of total exports. Turkey, Germany, the UK, Switzerland, Italy, New Caledonia, Greece and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.
Among the main countries of destination, Greece, with a CAGR of +88.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average shelled hazelnut export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 3.6% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, shelled hazelnut export price increased by +40.5% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 49% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+7.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into France
In 2021, overseas purchases of shelled hazelnuts decreased by -3.5% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, shelled hazelnut imports contracted to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by +0.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 44%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Turkey (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of shelled hazelnut to France, accounting for a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, shelled hazelnut imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the Netherlands (X tons), with a 3.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Turkey was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+5.4% per year) and the Netherlands (+30.0% per year).
In value terms, Turkey ($X) constituted the largest supplier of shelled hazelnuts to France, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 4.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Turkey amounted to -1.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+7.7% per year) and the Netherlands (+29.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average shelled hazelnut import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -5.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the average import price increased by 48% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Georgia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Georgia (+8.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
