Silk Yarn Market Size in France

After two years of decline, the French silk yarn market increased by 20% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, recorded a pronounced decline. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste decreased by -40.7% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, recorded moderate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 120% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

In value terms, silk yarn exports contracted remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a noticeable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 123% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then plummeted in the following year.

Exports by Country

Italy (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Spain (X kg) were the main destinations of silk yarn exports from France, together accounting for 82% of total exports. Germany, the United States, the UK and China lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +83.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 60% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+33.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into France

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste increased by 5.3% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 39%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, silk yarn imports contracted rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 28%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Italy (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of silk yarn to France, with a 58% share of total imports. Moreover, silk yarn imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), twofold. Belgium (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Italy stood at -3.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-2.4% per year) and Belgium (+57.3% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste to France, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Switzerland, with a 3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Italy amounted to -2.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-7.5% per year) and Switzerland (-12.2% per year).
