For the third consecutive year, the French soft drink market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -24.3% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a noticeable decline. Soft drink consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, soft drink production declined dramatically to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 33%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of soft drinks increased by 5.1% to X litres, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +70.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 62%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, soft drink exports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Germany (X litres), the UK (X litres) and Belgium (X litres) were the main destinations of soft drink exports from France, together comprising 64% of total exports. These countries were followed by the United States, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Canada, Spain, China, Italy and Saudi Arabia, which together accounted for a further 27%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +45.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for soft drink exported from France were the UK ($X), Belgium ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 45% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, the United States, Switzerland, Spain, Canada, Italy, China and Saudi Arabia, which together accounted for a further 37%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, China, with a CAGR of +32.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average soft drink export price amounted to $X per litre, rising by 7.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 38%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per litre in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Saudi Arabia (+7.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into France
In 2021, the amount of soft drinks imported into France surged to X litres, picking up by 33% compared with the previous year. In general, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +83.8% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The Netherlands (X litres), Germany (X litres) and Belgium (X litres) were the main suppliers of soft drink imports to France, together accounting for 54% of total imports. These countries were followed by Spain, Austria, Italy, Poland, Ireland, the UK and Switzerland, which together accounted for a further 35%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +34.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest soft drink suppliers to France were Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Austria ($X), together comprising 55% of total imports. Italy, Spain, Ireland, Belgium, the UK, Poland and Switzerland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Poland, with a CAGR of +27.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average soft drink import price amounted to $X per litre, waning by -4.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average import price increased by 12%. The import price peaked at $X per litre in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per litre), while the price for Belgium ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (-1.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
