Sorghum Market Size in France

In 2022, the French sorghum market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption showed tangible growth. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Sorghum Production in France

In value terms, sorghum production contracted modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, the total production indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -5.1% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The average yield of sorghum in France contracted slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, falling by -2.9% compared with 2021 figures. In general, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 16%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the average sorghum yield failed to regain momentum. In general, total exports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -10.3% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 64%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sorghum exports rose slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +93.5% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 31% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Spain (X tons) was the main destination for sorghum exports from France, accounting for a 60% share of total exports. Moreover, sorghum exports to Spain exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Belgium (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Netherlands (X tons), with an 8.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Spain stood at +9.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (+2.9% per year) and the Netherlands (-2.9% per year).

In value terms, Spain ($X) remains the key foreign market for sorghum exports from France, comprising 51% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Belgium, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Spain stood at +10.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (-0.8% per year) and Belgium (+3.8% per year).

In 2022, the average sorghum export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 14% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into France

In 2022, overseas purchases of sorghum decreased by -21.2% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, imports recorded a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 88% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sorghum imports dropped sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a noticeable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 141%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

The United States (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main suppliers of sorghum imports to France, with a combined 73% share of total imports. Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Hungary (with a CAGR of +28.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest sorghum suppliers to France were the United States ($X), Italy ($X) and Spain ($X), together accounting for 79% of total imports.

Italy, with a CAGR of +24.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+7.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
