Spain (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) were the main destinations of sugar exports from France, with a combined 58% share of total exports. Germany, the UK, Portugal, Ireland, Israel, the Netherlands, Egypt, Greece, Switzerland and Algeria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 33%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Portugal (with a CAGR of +46.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Spain ($X), Italy ($X) and Belgium ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for sugar exported from France worldwide, together accounting for 58% of total exports. Germany, the UK, Ireland, Portugal, Israel, Egypt, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece and Algeria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.
Portugal, with a CAGR of +33.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In 2021, the average sugar export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 12% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by 16% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Algeria (+8.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into France
In 2021, overseas purchases of sugar increased by 14% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced slump. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sugar imports totaled $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Germany (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main suppliers of sugar imports to France, together accounting for 55% of total imports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Brazil, Mauritius, Algeria, Colombia, Italy, the Czech Republic, the UK and Mozambique, which together accounted for a further 37%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Algeria (with a CAGR of +84.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest sugar suppliers to France were Germany ($X), Belgium ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together comprising 58% of total imports. These countries were followed by Spain, Brazil, Colombia, Mauritius, Italy, the Czech Republic, Algeria, the UK and Mozambique, which together accounted for a further 32%.

The average sugar import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -4.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a slight curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 13%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
