In 2022, overseas shipments of video game consoles decreased by -12.5% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a temperate increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 86%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, video game console exports declined to $X in 2022. In general, total exports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +66.5% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 65%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Belgium (X units), Germany (X units) and the UK (X units) were the main destinations of video game console exports from France, with a combined 43% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Italy, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands and Bulgaria, which together accounted for a further 39%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +33.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the average export price increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to the UK ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+5.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, purchases abroad of video game consoles decreased by -17.8% to X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports saw a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 47%. Imports peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, video game console imports dropped notably to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +1.9% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

In 2022, the Netherlands (X units) constituted the largest video game console supplier to France, with a 42% share of total imports. Moreover, video game console imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X units), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by China (X units), with an 18% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Netherlands amounted to +34.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+71.7% per year) and China (-15.6% per year).
