The French wallpaper market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, showed a pronounced decrease. Wallpaper consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wallpaper production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports from France
After two years of growth, overseas shipments of wallpaper and wall coverings decreased by -23.3% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports saw a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, wallpaper exports shrank modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a mild decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 8.7% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The UK (X tons) was the main destination for wallpaper exports from France, accounting for a 54% share of total exports. Moreover, wallpaper exports to the UK exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), fourfold. Belgium (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the UK stood at +2.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+13.9% per year) and Belgium (-14.1% per year).
In value terms, the UK ($X) remains the key foreign market for wallpaper and wall coverings exports from France, comprising 32% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 9.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the UK amounted to +5.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+16.1% per year) and Germany (+9.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average wallpaper export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 27% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+10.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Wallpaper Imports
Imports into France
Wallpaper imports into France rose markedly to X tons in 2021, picking up by 15% compared with 2020. In general, imports, however, showed a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, wallpaper imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a mild downturn. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest wallpaper supplier to France, accounting for a 61% share of total imports. Moreover, wallpaper imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belgium (X tons), threefold. Italy (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Germany totaled -2.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (-0.8% per year) and Italy (-13.0% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of wallpaper and wall coverings to France, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Germany totaled -2.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (+0.2% per year) and Italy (-2.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average wallpaper import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 5.3% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.3%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 33%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+13.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
