Walnut Market Size in France

The French walnut market shrank to $X in 2021, reducing by -11.5% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed moderate growth. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Walnut Production in France

In value terms, walnut production shrank slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a perceptible curtailment. Walnut production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The average yield of walnuts in France dropped slightly to X tons per ha in 2021, with a decrease of -2.8% against 2020 figures. Italy (X tons) was the main destination for walnut exports from France, accounting for a 39% share of total exports. Moreover, walnut exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Spain (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X tons), with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Italy was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Spain (-6.9% per year) and Germany (-4.7% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the key foreign market for walnut exports from France, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with an 18% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Italy stood at -2.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-6.3% per year) and Spain (-8.9% per year).

The average walnut export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 6.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a mild contraction. There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Moldova ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of walnuts decreased by -8.6% to X tons, falling for the fourth year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 154% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, walnut imports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 118% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Slovakia (X tons), Spain (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of walnut imports to France, with a combined 64% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Italy, Chile, Belgium and Germany, which together accounted for a further 34%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Chile (with a CAGR of +65.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Slovakia ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Spain ($X) were the largest walnut suppliers to France, together accounting for 69% of total imports. These countries were followed by Belgium, Chile, Germany and Italy, which together accounted for a further 28%.

Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
