For the third year in a row, the French worked slate market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 7.9% to $X in 2022. Overall, the total consumption indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. Exports by Country

Italy (X tons) was the main destination for worked slate exports from France, accounting for a 29% share of total exports. Moreover, worked slate exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (X tons), twofold. Luxembourg (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Italy stood at +33.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+24.3% per year) and Luxembourg (+22.5% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X), the UK ($X) and Switzerland ($X) constituted the largest markets for worked slate exported from France worldwide, together accounting for 40% of total exports. Luxembourg, Spain, the Netherlands, Portugal, Belgium, Poland and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 51%.

Based on 2022 figures, worked slate export price increased by +82.0% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average export price increased by 34%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of worked slate decreased by -2% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 18%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, worked slate imports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +70.0% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 28%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In 2022, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of worked slate to France, accounting for a 83% share of total imports. Moreover, worked slate imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), more than tenfold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Spain stood at +1.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+6.7% per year) and China (+14.8% per year).

In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of worked slate to France, comprising 84% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 6% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 5.6% share.
